Music Students Win Big at NATS Competition

Vocal students from the Department of Music are singing from the rooftops about their recent success. During the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) conference and voice competition, 15 George Mason students returned with first-place wins or honors distinctions. This was the first time that students from the department's Vocal Studies Program won in every category in which they competed.

Students of professors Patricia Miller, Laura Mann, Kathryn Hearden, and Carla Rae Cook earned wins at the competition held at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. In addition, students Carey Cannon and Alia Waheed were chosen as Outstanding Singers by the Virginia State NATS teachers' secret ballot, based on their Honors Recital performances. Cannon, awarded Best Male Singer, and Waheed, awarded Best Female Singer and Overall Outstanding Singer, each received a scholarship check.
